Stress First Aid: A Practical Framework for Business Owners

Stress First Aid (SFA) is a peer support and self-care model originally developed for high-stress professions like the military and healthcare. It’s now being adapted for business leaders and teams facing chronic stress, uncertainty and burnout.

For business owners, SFA offers a simple, actionable framework to recognize and respond to stress in yourself and your employees before it escalates into crisis. It’s built around the “7 Cs”:

  • Check – Be aware of signs of stress in yourself and others.
  • Coordinate – Connect with resources and support systems.
  • Cover – Ensure physical and psychological safety.
  • Calm – Use strategies to reduce acute stress.
  • Connect – Foster supportive relationships.
  • Competence – Build confidence and skills to manage challenges.
  • Confidence – Restore a sense of purpose and hope.
SFA is not therapy, but a toolkit for resilience—helping business owners create a culture where stress is acknowledged early, and support is part of the workplace fabric.

We hope you will join us at Caron Treatment Centers, to gain a greater understanding of SFA. Each participant will complete a brief Stress Continuum Self-Check—a simple color-coded tool that helps you identify where you are on the stress spectrum (Green: Ready, Yellow: Reacting, Orange: Injured, Red: Ill). You’ll walk away with a clearer understanding of your current stress level, and one personalized action you can take this week to move toward greater resilience. This activity reinforces the SFA model and gives you a practical starting point for applying it in your business.
